Informal employment (% of total employment)

Indicator id: informal_employment_share · Unit: % · Coverage: 2000-2026

SDG indicator 8.3.1: share of total employment that is informal -- persons in jobs not covered by national labour legislation, income taxation, social protection or entitlement to certain employment benefits, whether working in the formal sector, the informal sector, or households.

Sources

  • ILOSTAT (preferred) -- dataset SDG_0831_SEX_ECO_RT_A, code SDG_0831_SEX_ECO_RT:SEX_T:ECO_AGGREGATE_TOTAL (https://ilostat.ilo.org)

Caveats

Reported only in ILOSTAT's national labour force survey years, not annually (for Nepal: 2008 at 99.6%, 2017 at 81.5%); new to Groundfact, no second source to cross-check against yet. Nepal's informal employment share is among the highest in South Asia, reflecting the scale of subsistence agriculture and unregistered household enterprise -- pair with employment_agriculture_share for context.
